The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described a state of consciousness and presence in which the believer is perpetually in remembrance, awareness of and in connection with the imminent Divine Presence of God, and this is known as the state of ihsan.
It’s important to remember that nothing in our lives is meaningless or without purpose, and this includes our daily tasks, chores and work. However, it’s also easy to often feel that our responsibilities can keep us from worshipping Allah Almighty when we are not acting in an integrated and whole manner.
The key to making our work worship and thus of inherent value and benefit is to learn how to make all that we do and must do into meaningful and purposeful activities and endeavors, and this is done by opening up to presence and remembrance in and with what we do.
By learning to become present and mindful in our everyday chores and tasks, and by choosing to enjoy and bring love into what we do, we transform our work into worship that strengthens our faith and connection with the Divine while simultaneously acting, living and creating with excellence.
Vital to this skill and approach to daily life is the ability to use your breath to root and anchor yourself in presence and in remembrance. To do so, simply slow down, relax, breathe and connect, all the while affirming your intention with dhikr (for more detailed guidance in developing a meditative and mindful spiritual practice, please refer to the Islamic Meditation Program).
In this way, all that you do becomes blessed, sacred and holy, and not only does the quality of what you do thus improve exponentially, but so too does your work become a means of transmission of divine light, energy, healing and peace.
To your divine and eternal success.
