We are living in incredibly difficult and challenging times, marked by profound contraction. In Islam, as in life, we oscillate between contraction and expansion, much like breathing. Currently, we find ourselves in a prolonged state of contraction, characterized by pressure, hardship, difficulty, and challenge. Yet, it’s crucial to remember that beyond contraction lies expansion. This principle is affirmed in the Qur’an, in Surah ash-Sharh: “Verily with hardship, there is ease” (Qur’an 94:6).
For verily, with hardship there is ease. Verily, with hardship there is ease.
Surah ash-Sharh, 94:5—6
Understanding Contraction and Expansion
Contraction and expansion are natural parts of life. Contraction represents pressure and hardship, while expansion signifies relief and growth. The universe maintains a balance, and our lives reflect this oscillation. Despite the protracted state of contraction we are experiencing, faith teaches us that expansion follows. The deeper the contraction, the greater the subsequent expansion. This concept is vital for maintaining hope and faith during difficult times.
In the natural world, we see this balance everywhere. The cycle of day and night, the change of seasons, and the ebb and flow of tides all reflect this divine principle of balance between contraction and expansion. Life, too, follows this rhythm, where periods of hardship are invariably followed by periods of ease and growth. This oscillation is an intrinsic part of the human experience, serving as a reminder that challenges are not permanent but are precursors to eventual relief and success.
The Crisis in Gaza and Palestine
The ongoing crisis in Gaza and Palestine is a stark example of our current state of contraction. For nearly 10 months, the conflict has claimed nearly 200,000 lives, according to The Lancet, including deaths from malnutrition, disease, hunger, and violence. This tragedy, exacerbated by inadequate access to clean water, medical treatment, and nutrition, is one of the great calamities of our era. It is painful to witness such atrocity, but it’s essential to hold onto faith and hope.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is a manifestation of the intense contraction phase that affects not only those directly involved but also the global community that bears witness to it. The figures are staggering, with tens of thousands of deaths due to a combination of direct violence and the secondary effects of the conflict. The international community’s response, or lack thereof, adds another layer of frustration and despair for those striving for justice and relief.
The Role of Faith in Challenging Times
Faith is our anchor in times of darkness. The light of faith brings peace to troubled hearts and provides the strength to endure hardship. The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of faith and compassion, comparing believers to one body: when one part suffers, the entire body reacts. Empathy is a core component of faith, and it’s natural to feel pain for others’ suffering. This empathy drives us to alleviate the suffering of others, aligning with the essence of religion.
The similitude of the believers in their affection, mercy and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
The Qur’an repeatedly underscores the importance of maintaining faith during trials. In Surah al-Baqarah, Allah Almighty says, “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient” (Qur’an 2:155). This verse highlights that tests and trials are part of the divine plan to strengthen our faith and patience. Faith provides a framework for understanding and navigating these tests, transforming them into opportunities for spiritual growth.
Compassion and the Golden Rule
Compassion is the heart of all faith traditions. Jesus (peace be upon him) stated, “In everything, do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Matthew 7:12). This golden rule is the essence of the teachings of the prophets. True believers cannot allow harm to any living creature if they can prevent it. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) extended this principle to prohibiting harm to innocents, even in war. Real Islam condemns collateral damage, emphasizing justice and mercy.
The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are clear on the importance of mercy and compassion. In his final sermon, he said, “Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds” (Hadith, Sahih Bukhari). This profound message encapsulates the essence of Islamic teachings on justice and empathy. The true measure of our faith is in our ability to empathize with others and act with compassion and justice.
Surveying Community Sentiments
A recent survey of my newsletter in which nearly 170 respondents revealed that the majority are deeply affected by the current crisis. About 78% are exposed to news regularly, with 95% informed about global events. The survey highlighted prevalent emotions like anger (70%), frustration (74%), hopelessness (54%), and guilt (50%). Many respondents also reported feeling sadness, depression, anxiety, shame, and helplessness. These emotions, though natural, are toxic if not channeled constructively.
The emotional toll of witnessing such prolonged suffering is immense. Anger and frustration are natural responses to injustice, while feelings of hopelessness and guilt often stem from a perceived inability to effect change. This emotional burden can lead to mental and physical health issues if not addressed. Understanding these emotions and finding ways to channel them constructively is crucial for personal and communal well-being.
Strengthening Faith During Hard Times
Despite the pervasive negativity, 58% of respondents reported that their faith has become stronger due to witnessing the resilience of the Palestinians. This faith is crucial for maintaining hope and endurance. However, it’s concerning that 3% felt their faith weakened. Strengthening faith involves actively seeking connection with the divine and drawing inspiration from the steadfastness of others.
The Qur’an provides numerous examples of prophets who endured immense trials with unwavering faith. For instance, Prophet Ayyub (Job) faced severe afflictions yet remained steadfast in his devotion to his Lord, eventually being rewarded for his patience (Qur’an 21:83-84). These stories serve as reminders of the power of faith and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
Practical Solutions for Healing and Resilience
1. Prayer (Salat)
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) turned to prayer during hardship, deepening his connection with Allah Almighty. Prayer provides spiritual grounding and solace. Salat is a direct link to the divine, and an exercise with which to seek guidance and strength. In times of crisis, prayer offers a refuge and a means to align oneself with divine will.
2. Dhikr and Meditation
Remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and meditation foster stillness and surrender, bringing tranquility and peace. Breathing exercises help process and release negative energy. Dhikr, or the constant remembrance of Allah, helps to keep the heart at peace and connected to the divine, reducing anxiety and stress.
3. Exercise and Physical Movement
Strenuous activity helps expel toxins and negative energy, promoting physical and emotional well-being. Regular exercise is essential for managing stress. Physical movement, especially activities like running or yoga, can be incredibly therapeutic, helping to release pent-up frustration and promote overall health.
4. Limit Consumption of Negative News
Overexposure to negative news can be overwhelming. Set limits to stay informed without being consumed by despair. Balance this with positive and empowering content. Mindful consumption of news ensures that one stays informed without falling into the trap of constant negativity, which can be detrimental to mental health.
5. Nourish Relationships
Healthy relationships with family, friends, and community are vital. Islam emphasizes the importance of family and community ties, which provide support and strength. Maintaining strong social bonds is crucial for emotional support and resilience, especially in times of crisis.
6. Consume Positive Content
Balance negative news with uplifting and hopeful content. Engage with media that provides light and inspiration. Positive content can uplift the spirit, providing hope and motivation to persevere.
7. Pursue Knowledge
Educate yourself on important issues to communicate effectively and advocate for change. Knowledge empowers and enables constructive dialogue. Being well-informed not only helps in personal growth but also enables one to be an effective advocate for justice and change.
8. Work for Change
Strive to effect positive change in your capacity. Islam mandates enjoining good and preventing evil. Work towards justice with excellence. Engaging in activism and community service can be powerful ways to channel emotions constructively and make a tangible difference.
9. Heal from Trauma
Acknowledge and address personal and collective trauma. Healing is a continuous process that involves spiritual, emotional, and physical practices. Unresolved trauma can manifest in various ways, affecting overall well-being. Actively seeking healing, particularly spiritual healing, is essential.
May Allah Almighty guide us to what is best and alleviate the suffering of those enduring hardship. May He empower us individually and collectively, leading us to excellence, purity, goodness, light, love, and beauty. May Allah Almighty protect us and guide us to the path of true understanding and faith.
Allahumma ameen.
To your divine and eternal success.
